Decision follows attacks on cargo ships in the Red Sea

Several major carriers have said that they will be avoiding the Red Sea route and thus the Suez Canal for the time being. How will this impact global supply chains?

As per media reports, Houthi-Rebels have carried out attacks on several cargo ships, prompting the carriers reaction to look for alternatives to the Suez Canal.

Some 12% of world shipping traffic transits the canal, but options are available. The longer voyage on the southern route via Africa's Cape of Good Hope is longer in distance, but results in similar transit times, if travelled at full speed, albeit higher bunker (fuel) costs occur.

Therefore most experts expect little impact on business.
